This is just speculation for the moment, but Ram's first steps into the spotlight could be with two trucks called the Laramie Prospector and Laramie Western Sky. Those names come from a list of monikers Chrysler has trademarked for new models. Others, like the Chrysler 300 S8 and Dodge Nitro Detonator, we'll get up close and personal with at the Detroit Auto Show . Those Laramie models, though, haven't been mentioned anywhere or revealed on any Ram trucks yet. Of the five Ram trims available, Laramie is the highest, but there are no special editions within it. The Prospector and Western Sky could change that, and we'll be looking out for them next week in Detroit. Prospector - Throughout the 80s, this package was available for the Ram pickup. In the early 80s a special badge was affixed to the box side of the truck, but this was dropped in the mid 80s. Prospector was a package that usually included a different fuel tank, cloth seat and carpeting. In the later 1980s, a light package as well as the large 6x9 mirrors were added to the list of options. This trim package was carried on until the redesign in 1994. ↓ ↑ report 75.1317900527% 4 DiRF 4:51PM (1/09/2010) Ram van. FIAT will surely bring the IVECO Daily as a Sprinter replaycement sooner and maybe the Scudo and/or the Doblo to have something in similar size as the Ford Transit connect. Reply ↓ ↑ report 11 Ricky 2:23PM (1/09/2010) @JLevy I agree. If it wasn't for the fact that I read here on Autoblog that Ram is now a separate brand I would have no idea its not part of Dodge anymore. I really can't see what they're trying to accomplish with this, I don't think anyone had a problem with Dodge making cars and trucks. Reply ↓ ↑ report 60.5002605524% 12 bakka 2:32PM (1/09/2010) Actually this could be the beginning of another move on Fiats part. IVECO is the heavy truck manufacturer owned by FIAT. Several years ago they said they wanted to get into the class 8 truck market in North America. There was also talk that Doge would reenter the class 8 truck market when it was owned by Daimler. IVECO makes both cabover and conventional trucks in Australia. Renaming the truck RAM and getting select Mopar dealers to sell them is not all that far fetched. FIAT also makes the engines for their heavy trucks. We could be seeing RAM trucks in the near future. I should know, since I own one of these engines. MDS is good, but in comparison to Ford's newest engines it's still behind in fuel economy. Did you know the Hemi engine uses a Jurassic-era, belt driven fan? now tell me that belt driven fans didn't go out of fashion in the early nineties...and that's just an example among other power grabbing deviced (all belt driven) in this motor. Add DI, and electric driven peripherals and you'll get another 2mpg out of it. There you go, Tit for Tat or however you say it. ↓ ↑ report 59.701840205% 16 Dan 4:48PM (1/09/2010) The Hemi engine is outstanding. So what other pickups offer just an electric fan? Other than a few HP what advantage does an electric fan offer in terms of long term durability? It's not like the fan is DIRECTLY connected, there is a clutch involved and it's barely spinning inside of there unless it's needed. 5.7 engines also have Variable Cam Timing but yea it's so "old". HEMI powered cars don't use the belt driven fan either. And what newest Ford engines are you talking about? Thats right, Ford doesn't have any new truck engines out currently....so go ahead and keep lying to yourself. The Ram gets equal or better fuel mileage than any other full sized truck for 2009-2010, without special "XFE" editions, and obtains this with the severely outdated 545RFE transmission. So why don't you compare equal trucks? Chrysler was first organized as the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. [ 7 ] Up until 1998, Chrysler Corporation traded under the "C" symbol on the New York Stock Exchange . In 1998, Chrysler and its subsidiaries were purchased by German-based Daimler-Benz AG, creating the combined entity DaimlerChrysler AG . [ 8 ] Under DaimlerChrysler, the company was named DaimlerChrysler Motors Company LLC , with its U.S. operations generally referred to as the "Chrysler Group". On May 14, 2007, DaimlerChrysler announced the sale of 80.1% of Chrysler Group to American private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management , L.P., therefore being known as Chrysler LLC , although Daimler (renamed as Daimler AG ) continued to hold a 19.9% stake. [ 9 ] The deal was finalized on August 3, 2007. [ 10 ] On April 27, 2009, Daimler AG signed a binding agreement to give up its 19.9% remaining stake in Chrysler LLC to Cerberus Capital Management and pay as much as $600 million into the automaker's pension fund. [ 11 ] On April 30, 2009, Chrysler LLC filed for Chapter 11 reorganization and announced a plan for a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat . [ 12 ] On June 1, Chrysler LLC stated they were selling some assets and operations to the newly formed company Chrysler Group LLC. [ 13 ] Fiat will hold a 20% stake in the new company, with an option to increase this to 35%, and eventually to 49% if it meets financial and developmental goals for the company. [ 14 ] On June 10, 2009, the sale of most of Chrysler assets to "New Chrysler", formally known as Chrysler Group LLC was completed. The federal government financed the deal with US$6.6 billion in financing, paid to the "Old Chrysler", a new company called Old Carco LLC set up to take over the remaining assets and liabilities, which remained in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. [ 15 ] The transfer does not include eight manufacturing locations, nor many parcels of real estate, nor equipment leases. Contracts with 789 U.S. auto dealerships, who are being dropped, were not transferred. [ 20 ] [ 21 ] Walter Chrysler had originally arrived at the ailing Maxwell- Chalmers company in the early 1920s, having been hired to take over and overhaul the company's troubled operations (just after a similar rescue job at the Willys car company). [ 22 ] In late 1923 production of the Chalmers automobile was ended. [ 23 ] In January 1924, Walter Chrysler launched the well-received Chrysler automobile. The Chrysler was a 6-cylinder automobile, designed to provide customers with an advanced, well-engineered car, but at a more affordable price than they might expect. (Elements of this car are traceable back to a prototype which had been under development at Willys at the time that Walter Chrysler was there). [ 24 ] The original 1924 Chrysler included a carburetor air filter, high compression engine, full pressure lubrication, and an oil filter, at a time when most autos came without these features. [ 25 ] Among the innovations in its early years would be the first practical mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic brakes, a system nearly completely engineered by Chrysler with patents assigned to Lockheed, and rubber engine mounts to reduce vibration. Chrysler also developed a road wheel with a ridged rim, designed to keep a deflated tire from flying off the wheel. This safety wheel was eventually adopted by the auto industry worldwide. Following the introduction of the Chrysler, the Maxwell was dropped after its 1925 model year run, although in truth the new line of lower-priced 4-cylinder Chryslers which were then introduced for the 1926 model year were basically Maxwells which had been re-engineered and rebranded. [ 26 ] It was during this time period of the early 1920s that Walter Chrysler assumed the presidency of Maxwell, with the company then ultimately incorporated under the Chrysler name. In 2009, Fiat acquired a stake in United States-based Chrysler and plans for the Chrysler brand and Lancia to codevelop products, with some vehicles being shared. Olivier Francois, Lancia's CEO, took over as CEO of the Chrysler division in October 2009. Fiat has also stated that, depending on the market, some Chrysler cars will be sold as Lancias and vice versa. Francois plans to reestablish the Chrysler brand as an upscale brand. [ 37 ] Total vehicle production was about 1.89 million, with more than two-thirds of all units being light commercial vehicles. Chrysler ranks ahead of BMW and behind Daimler AG, and manufactures the fewest vehicles of the "Big Three" (Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company , and General Motors ) automotive brands of the United States. [ edit ] Other uses [ edit ] Turbine For many years, Chrysler developed gas turbine engines, which are capable of operating on a wide array of combustible fuels, for automotive use. Turbines were common in military vehicles, and Chrysler built many prototypes for passenger cars. In the 1960s, mass production seemed almost ready. Fifty Chrysler Turbine Cars , specialty designed Ghia -bodied coupes were built in 1962 and placed in the hands of consumers for final testing. After further development and testing to make emissions conform to 1970s-enacted EPA standards, the engines were planned as an option for the 1977 model LeBaron. However, Chrysler was forced to abandon the turbine engine as a precondition of U.S. government loan guarantees when the company experienced financial difficulties in the late 1970s. [ edit ] Electric vehicles The first electric vehicle produced by Chrysler was the 1992 Dodge EPIC concept minivan. In 1993, Chrysler began to sell a limited-production electric minivan called the TEVan ; however, this minivan did not gain much popularity throughout its lifetime. In 1997, a second generation, called the EPIC, was released. It was discontinued after 1999. Chrysler intended to pursue new drive concepts through ENVI , an in-house organization formed to focus on electric-drive vehicles and related technologies. Established in September, 2007, Chrysler's ENVI division led by Lou Rhodes specifically deals with new all-electric and hybrid vehicles not based on existing models. [ citation needed ] Chrysler LLC brought a wide range of green vehicles to the Detroit Auto Show , including three concept vehicles that incorporate electric drive technologies: The Dodge ZEO concept—short for "Zero Emissions Operation"—is an all-electric sport wagon combining a 64- kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with a 200-kilowatt (268 horsepower) electric motor. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle accelerates to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than six seconds and has a range of at least 250 miles (400 km). There is also a plug-in hybrid electric version. The Chrysler ecoVoyager concept combines a similar battery pack and motor with a small hydrogen fuel cell to achieve a 300-mile (480 km) range. The vehicle can travel about 40 miles (64 km) on battery power alone and can accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than eight seconds. The Jeep Renegade concept, a plug-in hybrid , combines a lithium-ion battery pack with dual 200 kW (270 hp) electric motors on each axle. The Jeep can travel 40 miles (64 km) on battery power alone and can travel 400 miles (640 km) with the help of its 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder clean diesel engine. The vehicle features a lightweight aluminum architecture. Chrysler is also currently planning at least three hybrid vehicles , the Chrysler Aspen hybrid, Dodge Durango hybrid, and the Dodge Ram hybrid including HEMI engines. Chrysler plans to use hybrid technology developed jointly with General Motors and BMW AG in vehicles beyond the two hybrid SUVs it had already announced to introduce in 2008. [ 38 ] The Ram 1500 pickup will be available as a hybrid in 2010. The Ram HEMI Hybrid will combine a two-mode hybrid system with a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. For the 2009 Ram 1500, Chrysler is launching an improved version of its HEMI V-8 engine featuring variable valve timing and a four-cylinder mode with an expanded operating range. The result is more power and torque, along with a 4% increase in fuel economy. Chrysler has also been experimenting with a Hybrid Diesel truck for military applications. Chrysler has debuted: [ 39 ] [ 40 ] the Dodge EV , an all electric sports car based on the Lotus Europa , with plans for a 120 mph (190 km/h) top speed and a range of 150 to 200 miles (240–320 km). plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), jolting the PHEV mass-production race: [ 41 ] the Chrysler EV , a series plug-in hybrid with 40-mile (64 km) all-electric range, based on Chrysler Town & Country . and the Jeep EV , based on a Jeep Wrangler. Chrysler is exploring in-wheel electric motors for this vehicle. At the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Chrysler unveiled the 200C EV Concept, a sports sedan with an all-electric range of 40 miles (64 km) and an extended range of about 400 miles (640 km). It also added the Jeep Patriot EV, another range-extended electric vehicle. If Chrysler does release an all-electric sports car in 2010, it will be in direct competition with two North American startup companies: Tesla Motors and Fisker Automotive . [ 42 ] Chrysler's ENVI division, which is dedicated to creating production electric drive vehicles, announced in September 2008 that Chrysler LLC will have electric vehicles in showrooms by 2010. They showed three "production intent" vehicles and stated that these are going to be the first of a broad portfolio of electric vehicles. [ 43 ] Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli said government loans would help speed the electric technology to market. But if they aren't approved, Chrysler will have to spend limited resources on developing new technology and would have to make cuts elsewhere, possibly in employment and development of conventional products. "Unfortunately we have had to furlough many families as a result of the economy turmoil and certainly the downward spiraling in the industry," he said. "I'd like to make sure that we don't have to go further to be able to support advanced technology work." [ 41 ] The Chrysler executives said the day is coming when the whole Chrysler fleet has electric powertrains. "The goal is to achieve fundamental technology, get economies of scale, improve our ability to make the future generations more robust, less cost, smaller, more powerful, better performance," Press said. "Ultimately it will lead to a transformation of our entire fleet that will be in some manner electric drive." [ 41 ] “ We chose a technology -- one in which we had the most experience, and which is most accessible to the consumer, and that's electricity. ” —Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli [ 44 ] [ edit ] PHEV Research Center Chrysler is in the Advisory Council of the PHEV Research Center . [ edit ] Chrysler Uconnect Web Chysler LLC Uconnect Web is a system that brings wireless Internet connectivity to any Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicle, via a wi-fi "hot-spot". According to Chrysler LLC, the hotspot range will extend approximately 100 feet (30 m) from the vehicle in all directions, and will combine both WiFi and 3G cellular connectivity. Uconnect is available on several current and discontinued Chrysler models including the Chrysler 300 , Aspen , Sebring , Town and Country , Dodge Avenger , Caliber , Grand Caravan , Challenger , Charger , Journey , Nitro , and Ram . [ 45 ] [ edit ] Marketing In 2007, Chrysler began to offer vehicle lifetime powertrain warranty for the first registered owner or retail lessee. [ 46 ] The deal covered owner or lessee in U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands, for 2009 model year vehicles, and 2006, 2007 and 2008 model year vehicles purchased on or after July 26, 2007. Covered vehicles excluded SRT models, Diesel vehicles, Sprinter models, Ram Chassis Cab, Hybrid System components (including transmission), and certain fleet vehicles. The warranty is non-transferable. [ 47 ] However, after Chrysler's restructuring, the warranty program was replaced by five-year/100,000 mile transferrable warranty for 2010 or later vehicles. [ 48 ] As of October 5, 2009, Dodge's car and truck line are now split into two, "Dodge" for cars, minivans and crossovers and "Ram" for light and medium duty trucks and other commercial-use vehicles. [ 49 ] [ edit ] Controversies In 1987, it was discovered that Chrysler sold an estimated 32,750 cars that had been test-driven with disconnected odometers - some as much as 500 miles (800 km) - before being shipped to dealers. The controversy gained fire after the United States Senate got involved, as Senator Sam Nunn bought one of the Chryslers in question. Chrysler settled out of court with complainants. [ 50 ] [ 51 ] Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca sought to minimize damage to the corporation's public image by calling a news conference in which he termed the action "dumb" and "unforgivable". Chrysler was among the companies boycotted by gay rights groups after removing advertisements from the ABC sitcom Ellen in 1997, which it deemed "controversial." After looking their vehicles side by side with the competitors, the other car manufacturers are producing cars rolling closer to the ground. And it seems, Chrysler will be producing lower vehicles in the near futures to improve the handling, fuel economy, and overall look. Chrysler will have the lower profiles of their vehicles as the hallmark of their future production. Gilles makes the 2011 Dodge Durango as an example which gets a lower fascia compared to its older versions and getting a different approach compared to the Grand Cherokee. He also adds that the vehicle will be a more fuel efficient. The Durango RT will also come an inche lower compared to the Express to improve the handling. The design executive of Chrysler also added that they may need new designers to help complete the work on 15 new vehicles. These new units will use platforms by their partner Fiat and are scheduled to roll out from the factories by 2012 through 2014. The car manufacturer admits that they are looking for new designers but adds that they are also very picky when hiring new members of the design team. Aside from being a good artist, they are also looking for someone who can lead, who has some spirit, and someone who will fit in their company’s culture. Chryslers will still be Chrysler though in Ireland and Great Britain where the Lancia models are not marketed. The CEO of Chrysler and Lancia in Europe disclosed that the company is planning to have a Lancia-Chrysler network of around 800 dealers and around 1000 dealerships by May next year. The parent company of the brands, Fiat, notified the dealerships in all corners of Europe and informed them that contracts will be ending by May 31, 2011. This will giveway to a new network of dealerships that will handle distribution and sales of the products of Lancia and Chrysler under the name of the former as created by Fiat. This will somehow benefit dealers since they will be able to market the full range of products. The dealers which sell Jeeps will be re-branded as Jeep retailers while Dodge will play a role of a niche player importing muscle cars from the United States in small volumes. The car doesn’t have the looks to boot and worsen the case with a coarse power plant under its hood. The report translates to the Sebring belonging to every possible “worst of” categories. That may sound too harsh but it is what the report says. Chrysler came up with a solution. They are killing the Sebring name. The car will not go out of production just to be clear but the Sebring will under go a major makeover to revive its appeal until a new member of the range arrive by 2013. The refreshed Chrysler Sebring is expected to roll out on the 4th quarter of 2010. Experts expect that it will also be rebadged to don the 200 name. The car will also be restyled following the design lines of the 200C Concept EV during the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The interior will also get a good upgrade. It will be a totally different vehicle as it tears apart the old Sebring and releases a new animal. The official name of the new Chrysler vehicle is yet to be announced. Buyers will have an option to add a dual clutch system or choose from a range of multiair engines that are fuel efficient . The Dodge Avenge is also expected to get some update. The car maker is said to be eager to deliver the first batch of cars as soon as this year. The plan was unveiled by the VP for manufacturing of Chrysler, Scott Gaberding, who also revealed that they are considering several options on the drawing board. This also includes an option to build a brand new factory if necessary. Chrysler is looking at the possibilities of using their plant in Windsor, Ontario, as well as their assembly lines in Mexico and the United States. The factory in Ontario serves for the production of Chrysler’s Town & Country, and the Dodge Caravan. If the plant will be re-organized and re-tooled for the production of the Fiat-based cars, it can help with the production of the MiTo under the Alfa Romeo brand. It can aid in the assembly of Chrysler vehicles using the C-Evo platform of Fiat. (more…) Getting car insurance quotes before actually buying that new Chrysler is important. Posted in Chrysler , Corporate , Fiat on January 21, 2010 | There are currently No Comments CEO projects profits for Chrysler by 2011 Fiat has been acting fast and playing it hard to help Chrysler boost its number and return to profitability. Amid the uncertain recovery of the U.S. and the seesaw exchange rates, the new Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is very optimistic that the company will be reversing its fortunes and be tallying profits as early as 2011. The CEO is expected to let the stakeholders and the public know about the 5-year plan of Chrysler by early November. The plan is expected to include selling shares to the public by 2011 and make the quarterly financial report of the company public by next year. The move seems to get the nod from business analysts and the auto industry community. Some experts foresee Chrysler to report about $841 million in operating profit by next year but declare a net loss of about $169 million as 2010 ends. When 2011 comes, these figures will jump up to $2.45 billion in operating profit and a $952 million net income. Analysts say that these figures might be too good for Chrysler before but is very doable today. Fiat and Alfa Romeo have new models in the pipeline and the decision makers are now talking about brand strategy. Chrysler is set to go strong in the next few years eyeing to over take Cadillac and Lincoln in the market race. The game plan for Chrysler is to move up in the scale to face luxury car makers head on. The Dodge on the other hand will focus on producing a sportier line of vehicles. The goal is not just to be at par with the Lincoln and the Cadillac but to outpace them with class. CEO of Chrysler Peter Fong puts it as making their brand a notch better than the competitors. It will be a difficult race as Cadillac tries to improve their line of products from their own garage. Cadillac is ahead of the race as of now with models like the CTS range, SRX, and the flagship XTS. Chrysler has not revealed how they plan to beat the other brands. The production of the PT Cruiser will resume at its plant in Toluca, Mexico. Chrysler decided to kill production of the PT Cruiser from January to mid this year due to the dropping sales figures and lack of future plans to update the car. The Cruiser became one among seven models axed by the management of Cerberus Capital Management. The other units killed by the management were the Pacifica SUV, Aspen SUV, Crossfire, Durango SUV, and the Dodge Magnum. The PT Cruiser graced the public starting in 2000 and was instantly loved for its retro looks. Aside from the styling, consumers opted for this Chrysler for its very affordable price. The PT Cruiser became an icon of the industry with dealers being able to inflate the price because of the high demand. Fast forward to today, the PT Cruiser’s styling is basically untouched. Some minor tweaking was done back in 2006. Little did the company know, the document revealed details about the new Chrysler 300 and 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Chrysler has recently survived bankruptcy and is now under Fiat ’s control. The viability plan also divulged insider information about future Fiat models to be produced once the Chrysler-Fiat alliance has been formalized. Therefore, it follows that Chrysler models will be undergoing major changes in the years to come. For instance, the upcoming Alfa Romeo models are to be called the Milano, the 147 hatch replacement, and the Giulia, 159 successor. The 2010 Milano model is set for Europe this year, while the Giulia will enter the market in 2011. According to Automotive News, Chrysler is deciding whether to come up with a brand new RWD sedan as a replacement for the Sebring and Dodge Avenger models that aren’t raking in enough sales. The candidates for the new model include a revamped Fiat D-Evo that is in the existing Alfa Romeo 159 model. The distribution goes to a health care trust associated with the United Auto Workers which takes 68%, Fiat has 20%, Canadian government gobbling 12%. The judge who ruled on the case cited no alternative to the bankruptcy but a fast liquidation of the assets to save the value of Chrysler. The move was opposed by certain consumer groups, an Indiana based pension funds firm, and about 789 Chrysler dealerships. These groups see the move as done in haste and that Chrysler is getting rid of dealerships unnecessarily. In the wake of the take over, Chrysler was forced to abandon thousands of units in the assembly with engines and components also unfinished. Several plants were also closed down. The halt of the production leads auto experts to assume that there will be delays in the launch of important projects like the new Grand Cherokee of Jeep and the next gen Chrysler 300. On the other side of the story, Italian car maker Fiat is set to market the 500 minicar in the United States dealerships of Chrysler. The launch is estimated to be 18 months from now. Forgive us for the pun but it will be in reality a retro after summer since Chrysler will discontinue the production of the PT Cruiser. Executives from Chrysler confirmed the decision during an interview earlier this January. The great style of the PT Cruiser has earned its respects from enthusiasts. It was even compared to the 1930’s gangster cars when it was launched last 2000. It was an instant hit and the car manufacturer has produced around 14 versions for the brand. The PT Cruiser had variations like the Woodie, Turbo, and Woodward Dream Cruise variations. The unchanged style of the car for almost a decade led to decline of sales. In 2008, PT Cruiser had a dismal performance in the market having a sales drop of 51%. The percentile translates to only 50910 units of PT Cruiser sold last year. The assembly line for this classic is in Toluca, Mexico.
