It was branded as a Chrysler model in Japan, Europe, and Australia (where it was the first car to be sold as a Chrysler since 1981) export markets, as well as briefly in Mexico, Canada, and Egypt. It replaced the Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance & Duster models and the Dodge & Plymouth Colt. The two-door model also replaced the Plymouth Laser in Plymouth's lineup. The Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which ended on September 23, 2005. It was available as a four-door or two-door coupe. It was powered by either a 132 hp (98 kW) at 6000 rpm and 129 lb·ft (175 N·m) at 5000 rpm SAE 2.0 L SOHC or a 150 hp (110 kW) at 6500 rpm (R/T DOHC model) and 133 lb·ft (180 N·m) at 5600 rpm SAE 2.0 L DOHC four-cylinder engine. The first generation Neon was available with a three-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission and was sold as a Dodge and Plymouth in the United States and Canada, and as the Chrysler Neon outside North America. At the Neon's release, then president of Chrysler Corporation Bob Lutz said, "There's an old saying in Detroit: 'Good, fast, or cheap. Pick any two.' We refuse to accept that." The Japanese press touted the Neon as the "Japanese car killer", due to a spiralling Yen and the lower production cost of the Neon. Neon possessed all the ingredients to be a potential success, receiving praise for its looks, lower MSRP, and more standard power when compared to competitor cars of similar vintage — the Honda Civic DX at 102 hp (76 kW), the Civic EX at 125 hp (93 kW), the Nissan Sentra at 115 hp (86 kW), the Ford Escort ZX2 at 130 hp (97 kW), the Toyota Corolla at 115 hp (86 kW), and the Chevrolet Cavalier Base and LS models at 120 hp (89 kW), among others. First-generation Neons were competitive in SCCA Solo autocross.[1] Available with both the SOHC or DOHC the ACR was competitive in its class, and featured four-wheel disc brakes, Arvin non-adjustable struts for 1995–1996 models and Koni adjustable dampers for 1997–1999 models, thicker anti-sway bars, fast-ratio steering, heavy-duty front wheel hubs, and a five-speed manual transmission with a numerically higher .81 fifth gear and final drive ratio of 3.94 for quicker acceleration. 1995 through 1997 models featured adjustable camber. The computer-controlled speed limiter was removed from 1995 ACR models (limited to 135 mph (217 km/h) on later models), and ABS was also, to save weight. The ACR offers no badging to distinguish it from other Neon models; the only visible differences are a bumper with fog light holes, but no fog lights and a lack of side moldings. In 1995, the ACR was only offered to SCCA members, but in subsequent years it was available to the general public. The name "ACR" was initially the internal ordering code for the "Competition Package", as it was termed in dealer materials; however, as knowledge of the model spread, the ACR name stuck. The backronym "American Club Racer" was coined due to its popularity with club and grassroots racers. The R/T model (Road/Track) debuted in the 1998 model year. Offered only with a 5-speed DOHC configuration, the R/T featured many of the ACR's mechanical upgrades including the numerically higher ratio 3.94 5-speed manual transmission, with the .81 5th gear and 135 mph speed limit. The R/T, however, was intended for the street, with more comfort and convenience features standard or available, and specialized parts like the adjustable dampers removed, although the dampers as well as the front coil springs found on R/T models were slightly stiffer, offering an advantage over standard model Neons. R/Ts featured optional stripes over the top of the car, silver "R/T" badging on the front door panels and the right side of the trunk deck lid, and a functional wing. The "Stripe Delete" option was available from the factory, but with no credit to the Neon's price. All striped R/Ts (Black,Red,Blue) had silver colored stripes, with the exception of the White R/Ts, which came with dark blue colored stripes. 1997–1999 Dodge Neon EX coupe Neons had unconventional option availability, including the lack of power windows in the rear doors. Certain color Neons, including red and black, had bumper covers molded in color rather than painted. These covers, while textured and not as glossy as paint, absorbed scuffs and scrapes with less visible damage. The mid-level Highline models in 95 & 96 were known for their unique "bubble" hubcap design. Initially, Neons were available in many bold colors, with adverts showing models in Nitro yellow-green, Lapis Blue, Aqua, and Magenta, however paint color choices became more subdued by the 1998-1999 model years, as the majority of buyers opted for more traditional colors (making certain colors a somewhat rare find). High impact colors wouldn't return to the 2nd generation Neon until the 2003-2004 model years, with the introduction of Solar Yellow, Orange Sunburst and Electric Blue. The Australian-market Chrysler Neon came in two models, the SE and the better-equipped LX. Later, the LX model was replaced by the LE with the updated model in 1999. In the United States, the lineup started out as Base, Highline, and Sport, with different styles and options in each line, but the lineup titles changed frequently (other trim lines included Expresso, SE, ES, SXT, ACR, and R/T). In Europe, the car was available with a 1.8 L engine. Europe received one limited edition model, the CS, which only came in Platinum paint. It was fitted with the 131 bhp (98 kW) SOHC engine, American R/T specification suspension (slightly lower, 3.5 cm (1.4 in) rear, 2.7 cm (1.1 in) front), rear spoiler, unique alloy wheels, standard leather interior, double stainless steel exhaust, 6CD charger and a shorter 5-speed manual gearbox. All Neons used American-designed engines. According to Dan Minick, who wrote for Engine Rebuilder magazine, the cylinder head of the DOHC version is an outright copy of that of Mitsubishi 2.0 L 4G63 engine, while the SOHC version borrows heavily from Mitsubishi's early 90s 4G15 enigne from Colt.[2] Mitsubishi also used the Chrysler-designed DOHC ECC engines with a reversed cylinder head. The second generation Neon was only available as a four-door sedan. In some global sales regions, including the U.S., the sole engine was the 2.0 L SOHC engine, the power output remaining at 132 hp (98 kW). An optional Magnum engine configuration (with an active intake manifold) that produced 150 hp (110 kW) was available. Both engines had a redline of 6762 rpm. The second generation was more refined than the first generation car. It was advertised that the second generation Neon had over 1,000 refinements from the original generation. The first generation's frameless windows were replaced with a full-framed door. Other NVH refinements were implemented. The new interior and greater size increased weight. The DOHC ECC engine was no longer available. In 2001, The R/T trim returned after a one-year hiatus. The R/T consisted of a new 150 hp (110 kW) SOHC Magnum 2.0 L Engine, 16 in (41 cm) wheels, spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, quicker steering box and stiffer springs. The 2001 and 2002 R/Ts had a flat, 'hammerhead' spoiler. From 2000-2003, the R/T was sold as a Chrysler in Europe. The Neon was offered with a Sport package for the 2001 model year only. It consisted of an R/T wing, R/T 16 in (41 cm) wheels, R/T springs, white instrument cluster and R/T steering box. It was an R/T visually except for the lack of dual exhaust, R/T lower mouldings, fog lamps and R/T exclusive front bumper. The Sport only came equipped with the base model's 132 hp (98 kW) engine and was available with an automatic transmission (unlike the manual-only R/T model). 2001 was the last year for the Plymouth Neon, and the Plymouth brand as well, the last Plymouth Neon (which also was the last Plymouth), a silver four-door sedan, rolled off the assembly line on June 28, 2001. The former Dodge and Plymouth Neon were briefly sold under the Chrysler name in Canada from 2000–2002, until being renamed as Dodge SX 2.0 for 2003. In Europe, Australia, Mexico, and Asia, the car had always been sold as a Chrysler, as Dodge and Plymouth passenger cars were not marketed outside the U.S. and Canada at the time. Besides the 2.0 L engine, it used the same Tritec 1.6 L unit found in the MINI prior to 2007. The 1.6 L unit is a variation of the 2.0 L SOHC engine designed by Chrysler and built by Tritec.[3] Originally, the second generation Neon featured a five-speed manual transmission using the former ACR gear ratios to improve acceleration. However, this hurt gas mileage and made the car noisier on the highway, and eventually the original gear ratios were restored. A four-speed automatic was offered in the Neon for the 2002 model year, with gearing changed the following year. The Neon's name was changed to SX 2.0 in Canada in 2003. In Australia and Canada, the Chrysler Neon was discontinued in 2002. In 2002, the front clip was changed to match the R/T and ACR front clip with the exception of missing a lower lip. The Neon was facelifted again for 2003 with large "crosseyed" headlights and crosshair grille. The ACR model was discontinued for 2003; the R/T model for 2004. The Chrysler Neon continued to be sold in Europe until 2004. In Brazil, the Neon was marketed as a luxury mid-size sedan; for Mexico it was a competitor to the Ford Escort, and sold as a Chrysler with either the 1.6 or 2.0 L engine and European-style taillights (with separate amber indicator lights), except for the R/T model, which was a Dodge, with U.S.-style taillights. Like the Neon, the Caliber had an SRT-4 variant, but like the standard Caliber, it used a completely different engine.[3] The Belvidere plant underwent retooling for the Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot. In markets like Australia the Neon range was reduced to either 2.0 LX or 2.0 SE models. [edit] Safety The first generation Neon earned a "Poor" rating in an offset frontal Crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This was the same rating as the Chevrolet Cavalier, Mitsubishi Mirage, and the larger Ford Contour, but lower than some cars introduced after 1995. The second generation Neon earned a higher "Marginal" rating. The second generation were rated as "Poor" in the side impact crash test[5] (IIHS Safety ratings go from "Poor", to "Marginal", "Acceptable" and "Good"). Only the Chevrolet Cavalier performed worse in the small car category in 2005, the Neon's final year.[6] Other cars made from 2000 to 2005 which were rated "Poor" when tested without optional side airbags included the Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, Mitsubishi Lancer, and Chevrolet Cobalt. No small car made in this period, tested without side airbags, achieved better than a "Poor."[7] In 2005, the Institute carried out side impact tests on 14 small car models, simulating an impact with an SUV. Among these, the Neon performed the worst. IIHS stated that the Neon had “...major problems beginning with its structure. This car is a disaster...The structure is poor...If this had been a real driver in a real crash, it’s likely it wouldn’t have been survivable...if safety is a priority, the Neon is a small car to be avoided.”[8] Second generation headrests were rated as "Poor".[9] Driver deaths fatality risks statistics — published by the IIHS — rated the Neon and 15 other vehicles among the "Highest rates of driver deaths.", The Neon had 161 driver deaths per million registered vehicle deaths, while the average for the Neon class (4-door small) was 103. It was loosely based on the Chrysler K engine and the Rover K engine, sharing the same 87.5 mm bore. The SOHC cylinder head on the 2.0 is similar to that on Mitsubishi's "Orion" 4G15B, and the DOHC head from the 2.0 and 2.4 is similar to Mitsubishi's "Sirius" 4G63B. The DOHC head was developed by Chrysler with input from the Chrysler-Lamborghini team that developed the Chrysler/Lamborghini Formula 1 V12 engine in the early 1990s[1].. The Neon engine itself is the loose basis for the Tritec engine. Beginning in 2005, the Neon engine began phasing out in favor of the new Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance joint-venture engine. The 2.0 and 2.4 L variants were built at Saltillo Engine in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, Mexico. The 1.8 and 2.0 was also built at Trenton Engine in Trenton, Michigan, United States. It produces 115 hp DIN (85 kW) and 112 ft·lbf (152 N·m) and meets Euro III standards. [edit] 2.0 The 1,996 cc (1.996 L; 121.8 cu in) version of the Neon engine, was the first offered. Production began in 1994 in Trenton, MI, and it was used in many Chrysler Corporation vehicles. It is available in both SOHC and DOHC 4-valve versions. The engine features a cast-iron block, with pistons with shallow crowns to save weight. The block uses a bedplate featuring a perimeter wall with transverse webbings for durability and quiet operation at high RPM's. The pistons are attached to fracture-split forged powdered metal connecting rods using semi-floating press-fit pins. A gerotor oil pump is driven directly from the crankshaft on the front of the engine. A reinforced rubber timing belt is used to drive the valvetrain. Early production 2.0 L engines used a hydraulic tensioner to tension the timing belt. 2000 and 2001 engines received a mechanical spring-loaded tensioner that tended to wear out prematurely, causing serious valve and piston damage upon belt failure due to the interference design of the engine. 2002+ engines utilized a different mechanical tensioner. The water pump is driven from the timing belt, with the water pump housing cast partially into the engine block itself. 1995 model year engines had three features that set them apart from later model year engines. The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system utilized a plastic oil separator box that was vented directly to the block itself; the breather hose and PCV valve hoses attached to the box, and connected to the induction system. Later model year engines featured a PCV system that was molded to the cylinder head valve cover. The second feature was internal in nature - the crankshaft main bearings were keyed into the bedplate on the right rear of each transverse web. Later model years featured keys machined on the right front of each web. These considerations are important when considering a rebuild or replacement of this engine in a given vehicle. The third feature would be a slightly bigger cam that was changed on 1996 and up SOHC vehicles due to a rough idle when the A/C was on. This 1995 cam is now being sold by dealers as a power upgrade for 1996 and up SOHC engines, but it can also easily be found at auto recyclers or salvage yards for a cheap price. 2002 and earlier model year engines featured a one-piece cast nodular iron crankshaft with counterweights present on either side of each crank pin. A crankshaft tone wheel was present between number 1 and number 2 connecting rod pins, and was machined such that a Hall-effect magnetic pickup mounted to the engine block could read the position of the crankshaft as it rotates during normal operation. 2003 and later model year engines switched to a two-piece crankshaft. The tone wheel was re-engineered to attach to the crankshaft using three bolts, had a tone pattern that was substantially different from previous model year engines, and was moved to the rear of the crankshaft. For this reason, these engines are generally not interchangeable between the 2002- and 2003+ model years. Up to late 1999, this engine type suffered from oil leaks between the block and cylinder head. The threads for the head bolts near the 4th cylinder were bored too shallow at the factory, preventing the head from properly sealing. The oil restrictor in the composite gasket would separate from the gasket causing a leak. Chrysler Corporation used several different designs of composite material head gasket in an attempt to solve this problem. In 1998, a thicker multi-layer steel head gasket was introduced that eliminated this oil leak. It can be identified by a small metal tab with a hole through its center sticking out between the block and head between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders. The ECB SOHC version, found in earlier models, is identical except for the crank trigger wheel. When equipped with the newer crank wheel for the new NGC engine computer, the A588 version cannot be directly transplanted into a vehicle originally equipped with the earlier style engine using an SBEC (Single Board Engine Controller). Output is 132 hp (98 kW) SAE (98 kW) at 5600 rpm with 130 ft·lbf (177 N·m) of torque at 4600 rpm. It has an aluminum SOHC cylinder head. It uses a reinforced plastic intake manifold (although a few of the 1995 and 1996 engines received an aluminum intake manifold due to a shortage of the plastic parts). They were painted black, but it's easy to see the casting marks and prints on the manifold. The aluminum version is prized among enthusiasts as it's easy to port and polish for increased flow characteristics. Applications: Dodge Neon/Plymouth Neon (1995–2005) Dodge Stratus/Plymouth Breeze (1995–2000) Specifications: Compression Ratio: 9.8:1 Camshaft Configuration: SOHC Power: 132 hp (98 kW) @ 5600 rpm Torque: 130 ft·lbf (180 N·m) @ 4600 rpm [edit] Magnum The Magnum SOHC version, code ECH, develops 150 hp (110 kW) SAE (111 kW) at 6500 rpm, and 135 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. Chief differences between this version and the A588 include a cast aluminum SOHC cylinder head that more easily passes exhaust gases than the base engine, a camshaft that is optimized for higher engine RPM's, a factory welded exhaust short-tube header in lieu of a cast exhaust manifold, and a two-piece intake manifold. This manifold features unequal-length intake runners that are switched during engine operation by an electric actuator that controls butterfly-type valves in the shorter intake runners. The longer runners are always open, and provide a mild supercharging effect due to their length between 3000 rpm and 4800 rpm. The shorter runners, open from 4800 rpm to redline at wide-open throttle, also provide a tuned resonance effect due to their length. The shorter runners are also opened at wide-open throttle below 3000 rpm to provide an intake path to each cylinder that is as free-flowing as possible. Applications: Dodge Neon R/T (2001–2004) Dodge Neon ACR (2001–2004) Plymouth Neon ACR (1995–1998) Specifications: Compression Ratio: 9.8:1 Camshaft Configuration: SOHC Power: 150 hp (110 kW) @ 6500 rpm Torque: 135 ft·lbf (183 N·m) @ 4800 rpm Rev-Limiter: 6750 RPM [edit] ECC The DOHC ECC 2.0 produces 150 hp (110 kW) SAE at 6500 rpm with 130 ft·lbf (180 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with roller rocker arms and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and an aluminum intake manifold. The version used in the PT Cruiser (non-US) and Dodge Neon features a cylinder head with the intake ports facing the front of the vehicle, like the SOHC A588. Versions (420A) used in the Dodge-designed chassis, such as the Dodge Avenger and Mitsubishi Eclipse, have the intake ports facing the rear of the vehicle. Most other specifications are identical, however, and even some head components (such as the valve cover) are compatible. Applications: Chrysler PT Cruiser (non-US) (ECC) Dodge Avenger/Chrysler Sebring (1995–1999) (420A) Dodge Neon/Plymouth Neon (1995–1999) (ECC) Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon (second generation, 1995–1999) (420A) Specifications: Compression Ratio: 9.6:1 Camshaft Configuration: DOHC Displacement: 1996 cc (121.8 CID) Power: 150 hp (110 kW) @ 6000 rpm Torque: 130 ft·lbf (180 N·m) @ 4800 rpm Rev-Limiter: 7200 RPM [edit] 2.4 and 2.4 Turbo The Neon itself never carried a naturally aspirated 2.4L engine in its lineup, but a 150 hp (110 kW) N/A version was used in Chrysler's JA, JX, and JR platform cars from 1995-2006 along with the Jeep Liberty from 2002-2005. The code for this engine was EDZ. As with some other engines of various architecture used in Jeeps, EDZs used in the Liberty carried Chrysler's PowerTech name. The SRT-4 performance variant utilized a 2.4L Turbo. The turbocharged EDV/EDT is similar to the regular EDZ. Output is 245 hp (183 kW) SAE (172 kW) at 5300 rpm with 260 ft·lbf (339 N·m) of torque at 2200-4400 rpm. This engine, code A855, has a cast iron partially open deck block and split crankcase. It uses an 8.1:1 compression ratio with Mahle cast eutectic aluminum alloy pistons, forged connecting rods with cracked caps and threaded-in 9 mm rod bolts, and a cast high-hardness steel crankshaft. The cylinder head is cast aluminum, with the cylinder heads being a 48-degree pent-roof design with a partial cloverleaf between the intake valves. The valves are actuated by hydraulically-adjusted rocker arms with roller cam followers. The SRT-4 and PT Cruiser Turbo use the same engine block and heads The intake manifold, turbo plumbing, and intercooler are all different. The cast-aluminum 8-row Valeo intercooler is mounted in the front, and the reverse-rotation Mitsubishi TD04LR-16Gk turbocharger has a 6 cm2 (1 sq in) turbine inlet. The turbocharger compressor housing features a built-in bypass valve, and the turbo housing is cast into the exhaust manifold with a loop-around flow pattern. The hot Neon R/T looks good and is willing, but the engine feels coarse and strained. Sadly the problems with rear space and the poor ride quality remain. This does not endear it to family buyers.
