Expert Rating: An American muscle car without enormous running costs? Andy Enright Is intrigued by the Chrysler 300C CRDI like to think of myself as a laid back kind of person but one thing that really gets my blood boiling is to hear Americans whinging at the prospect of having to pay three dollars for a gallon of petrol. Dont they realise how fortunate they are, to be able to drive around in extravagantly powerful cars without having to foot a significant bill? It seems not.Over here, things are very different. As much as I loved the 5.7-litre Chrysler 300C when I first tested it, the sobering fuel figure that emerged from my calculator at the end of the week was a meagre 18mpg. Admittedly, a lot of that was through urban areas but it still didnt make pretty reading. Thats why the 300C CRD diesel model makes a lot more sense. If there was ever an automotive equivalent of Through The Keyhole, the 300C CRD would make a fascinating case. Who, indeed, would drive a car like this? On the exterior its about as flamboyant as a four door saloon car gets but under that bonnet, or perhaps hood, is one of the most eminently sensible engines around. Its also one of the best engines around too. Generating 215bhp, itll haul the big Chrysler to 60mph in 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 143mph. Thanks to that massive 510Nm of torque, it doesnt feel significantly slower than the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 when youre up and rolling. Perhaps the most telling fact about the muscle power of this car is the fact that it hails from Graz in Austria, rather like one A.Schwarzenegger. Even with that amount of torque, 1,928kg of car takes some shifting but the engine never sounds strained or harsh. The direct injection unit is very linear in its power delivery and the turbocharger gets going from very low engine speeds. This means that even while trickling about town, letting the engine and gearbox do all the work for you, youll still return reasonable fuel consumption figures. Chrysler claim an average of nearly 35mpg for this car but possibly an even bigger attraction is the asking price."The real kicker is that that sticker price."This looks like a £35-£40,000 piece of hardware and parked next to a BMW or Audi that costs this much, the Chrysler will draw more admiring glances. The real kicker is that the sticker price is just £26,250 on the road for the saloon and only £1,500 more for the Touring estate. Thats about the same as a decently specified BMW 320d. I know what Id rather have. With this car, Chrysler aim to bring some passion back to the E-segment, with a great looking, well-equipped, competitively-priced car. They dont see the Chrysler 300C competing directly with the big German brands which is quite right. Apart from anything else, at under £27,000, the 300C is nearly a third cheaper than these saloons. Instead, the marketeers in Milton Keynes say that prospective customers are looking for a practical alternative with good fuel economy and interior space but dont want to compromise on looks or outright performance. Standard features on the Chrysler 300C include Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and an all-speed Traction Control System, front and rear side-curtain airbags, xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and a rear park assist system. Air-conditioning and heated leather driver and front passenger seats also come as standard on all vehicles in the Range. In the UK, the car is covered by Chryslers three-year, 60,000 mile warranty. Like most American models, the handling isnt quite up to the standard of its key European rivals. The steering is somewhat vague and the handling soon lapses into safe and predictable understeer. This isnt surprising given the weight in the nose, but it does make the 300C feel a little stodgy, an impression backed up by the nautical levels of body roll the car displays if the driver gets a little enthusiastic at the tiller. Despite this relaxed attitude to cornering, the ride quality is surprisingly garrulous. If you drive this car in a straight line, it will feel sporty - which is enough for the domestic market but may not satisfy customers here. Unlike, say, Volkswagen, who are a little more generous in their platform sharing strategies, Chrysler is definitely the junior sibling in the Daimler Chrysler partnership and was beginning to receive a reputation for getting the hand-me-downs. Much has changed of late, with the V6 CDI engines of the latest Grand Cherokees and the specially developed chassis of the 300C. The Chrysler still hasnt caught up with Mercedes recent resurgence in build quality however. Inconsistent panel gaps, hard touch plastics and insubstantial glove box hinges arent what customers in this bracket expect. The basic design of the fascia is clean and rather Spartan, but the execution leaves a little to be desired. Youll forgive it, however, when you get that turbocharged V6 spooled up. The five-speed Mercedes-sourced automatic gearbox slurs between the ratios nicely, the engines broad spread of torque helping here. Youll be grateful for rear parking sensors when you need to reverse it into a parking bay though. The high rear shelf limits rearward visibility and youre left with a vague approximation of the 300Cs extremities. Next time I hear an American moaning about fuel prices, Ill have a little chuckle to myself and calm my soaring blood pressure by thinking about what a deal weve got on their Chrysler 300C CRD. Not sold in the US, this is a car we can keep to ourselves.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler 300C CRD diesel PRICES: £26,250-£27,750 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 16 CO2 EMISSIONS: 215g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 143mph / 0-60mph 7.6s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [combined] 35mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS, stability control WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height, 197/74/58 inches Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Friday November 17 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

They’re not after the statement that a BMW 5-Series or a Mercedes E-Class makes about them. Nor into spending the money that making such statements entails. They simply miss the performance, luxury and ambiance of a big rear-drive car like a Scorpio, an Omega or a Volvo 960. The Omega is probably the most missed of all. So, quite smartly, GM stepped into its breach and filled it with the right-hand-drive Cadillac CTS, at prices between £25k to £30k. Meanwhile, Daimler Chrysler’s other half was looking at the same niche. And, though they’ve been a long time coming, we can now finally buy RHD examples of the Chrysler 300C. To launch it Chrysler sprung two surprises. The first is the option of Mercedes very latest 218bhp 3.0 V6 diesel engine. The second is the price: just £25,750 on the road. For that you get a large 5-seater saloon sitting on big 18” wheels with huge, unfashionably high profile but very good looking 225/60 tyres. You get leather upholstery, 8-way heated electric memory seats, dual zone climate control, tyre pressure monitoring system, Xenon headlights, headlight washers, electronic vehicle information system, pre-programmable electric dipping/folding side mirrors, suspension self-levelling, 60/40 split folding rear seatbacks, 6-speaker CD radio, express lift and drop anti-pinch electric windows, multi function leather steering wheel with mock tortoiseshell top, automatic wipers, electrochromatic dimming interior rear view mirror, 5-speed Mercedes style Geartronic automatic transmission, Mercedes style cruise control, ESP, TCS, EBA, front and rear side curtain airbag, rear park assist, even metallic paint. And the choice of either a 249bhp 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine or the aforementioned 218bhp 3.0 litre Mercedes V6 diesel. At the risk or repetition, I’ll say it again. All for £25,750. What can Chrysler be thinking of? They’re only bringing in 2,500 300Cs in total next year and every former Scorpio and Omega owner together with every private hire owner/driver in the country is going to want one. The idea is to make sure they don’t have to discount. And that, of course, protects owners investments. There’s nothing worse than paying £30,000 for a car, then finding out that Steve down the road got the same car as an end of the month bargain for £24,000, then, a year later, seeing year old examples sell for £12,000 at auction. The astonishing thing about the 300C CRD auto is it’s also the best of the range to drive. On paper, performance is pretty good. 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, top speed 143mph, and 376lb of torque in the mid-range. The engine, transmission and gearing are very well matched. You get 35mph per 1,000rpm in 5th, so motorway cruising is quiet and unflustered. Yet bury the pedal and you’re up to 120 very quickly. On main roads, the Geartronic selector means you can select and hold 3rd to overtake by simply knocking the lever left a couple of times. Then get back into D by knocking it right. Or just used the reliable kickdown. The seats are big, soft and comfortable with a good range of lumbar adjustment. Ride isn’t perfect because they’ve stiffened the suspension a bit for the UK, but those 225/60 tyres shrug off speed humps and kerbs with distain. In fact, the track is so wide you can straddle metre wide ‘speed cushions’ without damaging the tyres. And while the handling isn’t as good as it would be following the BMW route of even bigger wheels with ultra low-profile tyres, it’s good enough, especially at high speeds. In comparison to the diesel, the identically priced 3.5V6 petrol does everything a bit more slowly, drinking more fuel in the process. So that’s a car for the very few people who just have to have a petrol engine under the bonnet. For £32,995 you can step up to 340bhp 5.7 V8 Hemi, and a lot more kit including GPS satnav, 6 CD multiplayer, electric glass sunroof, premium sound system and walnut trim instead of tortoiseshell. While straight-line speed is obviously faster, it’s not really that much quicker than the diesel and the bigger engine means more understeer. Later next year there will be a 425bhp 6.1 litre SRT V-8, still with the 5-speed autobox and sitting on 20” wheels with lower profile tyres. While Chrysler UK’s MD told me the biggest selling 300C accessory in the States is a slightly less intimidating Bentley/Jaguar style chrome mesh grille. Any downsides? Well there is the flawed console. The fascia is simply designed and well put together with an expensive looking brushed aluminium insert. Yet the console is low-rent with a nasty hard plastic flap over a pair of cupholders that get in the way of the gearlever. But that’s it. My advice is to get your order in now before they sell the whole year’s allocation. Photograph: Simon Stuart-Miller It's the wheels you notice first. Surely they've been removed from an articulated lorry. They can't really be that big and belong to a saloon car. Can they? Yes, as they say in the US, they can. For we are dealing with American dimensions here: inflated, supersized, absurdly large. And the Chrysler 300C V6 CRD is nothing if not a hymn to excess bulk. Everything about it is chunky and overblown, like some flabby heavyweight wearing a snazzy title belt. The belt, in this case, is the grill, a large mesh affair that looks as if it's been fitted upside down, having been lifted from a Bentley. There's no shame in that. Bentleys are very nice cars. We'd all like one. But would we like a Chrysler 300? Well, not if we plan on driving it any place in which turning is required. It is about as nimble as a Sherman tank. Nor is it a car that thrives on low speed situations, such as, say, starting. In first gear, it feels as if the QE2 is attached to the back. Indeed, the electric-powered front seats seem to have more oomph.In fact, the leather seats are one of the car's virtues. Not sumptuous, but expansive and comfortable in that way that makes you wish you smoked cigars. But much of the interior seems to have been constructed on the principle of never mind the quality, feel the quantity. There's little attention to detail. But then there's little detail to pay attention to. The dashboard is a thing of bland vastness, reminiscent of something from a 70s Zodiac with a few modern gadgets added on.In short, although the 300 was produced as a result of Chrysler's brief liaison with Mercedes Benz, it's hard not to see in this car the grand big-is-better follies of the US motor industry and, indeed, the embodiment of the manufacturing policy that led Chrysler to file for bankruptcy protection earlier this year. You could dwell on all of this, and doubtless come up with a socio-economic theory that explains the history of western capitalism. Or alternatively you could take this giant out on the open road.I recommend the latter strategy. It's a beast at speed. There's nothing dramatic or flashy about the progression. Rather, the sensation is akin to sitting in a familiar armchair that happens to be located at the front of a locomotive. Driving north of the speed limit, the 300 is not exactly poetry in motion, but it is physics: mass x velocity = momentum. It feels like nothing can stop you. And presumably it was that particular illusion that led to the car being built in the first place.
